Kristin Urban is featured in our No. 14 Free Loader with her piece, Ma Petite Maison. We talked with Kristin about how she started writing and what the term “free loader” means to her.

Tell me a little bit about yourself, where did you grow up etc?

I was born and raised in Orlando, Florida. I grew up spending my time reading books, especially those written by British authors (to this day, I still get confused which is the American or British way to spell the color grey). I spend most of my time outdoors, and it wasn't until post-college that I began writing for fun. I studied Art History, and I missed writing things after graduation.

What is your favorite thing to write about?

That's hard to say. I enjoy writing travel stories but I especially like writing about women and their personal lives.

How do you handle writer's block?

I am far from the best person to ask this question. If you have an idea to write something, don't put it off; do it right away. Otherwise, the drive and spark may be lost. Also, make a hard deadline for whatever it is you are writing. If you don't have an editor or a submission deadline, tell a friend, relative, or significant other, or write down for yourself.

What would you say is your proudest accomplishment as a writer?

Honestly, being seen as one. Since I didn't study it in school, I sometimes have imposter syndrome. But then I talk to people who have read my work, or am asked to write something, or to collaborate on a project and it feels...almost strange. Being able to articulate and create stories for myself and others is something that I deeply treasure.

What do you think of when you hear the phrase Free Loader?

A car. Which, I know it’s odd. But beyond that, my mind goes to a family member who is knowingly taking advantage of a hospitable aunt or uncle.

What inspired your piece Ma Petite Maison?

I've had the image of a young woman wearing heels, going up the stairs for a while now. And I have a whole backstory to this character, but I never actually had any story to go with it. The topic was inspiration enough for me to find a story for Erin to belong in.

Any upcoming projects?

I am currently writing my first investigative journalistic piece, which I am very excited about.
